I put in a long day in the studio yesterday that was full of highs and lows. The highs - made some pretty stuff:
The lows - I had my first mishap with the silver pickle. I know, I know! But in my defense, it was 1:00 am. Luckily I realized my mistake pretty quickly (put the silver in the pickle pot using my steel pliers). Even so, a necklace I was working on came out with a thin coating of matte pink copper all over it.
Thank God for the internet and super pickle (a mix of pickle and hydrogen peroxide). Two seconds in the super pickle and the silver was back to a lovely shiny silver. The thin pink coating bubbled off completely. After that, I took my tired self to bed. That was enough drama-rama for one day!
If you ever find yourself in the same boat, I used this resource from Shoebox Studio on pickles. I use a natural pickle (nothing against Sparex, just like to use natural as much as possible to keep our exposure to chemicals down) and mixed it equal parts with hydrogen peroxide. Please read the article from Shoebox Studios before proceeding for safety information. After all, this is a chemical reaction you will be creating!
